I sttrugled to hold my chopsticks in place! The first challenge to using chopsticks with your non-dominant hand
When I started practicing using chopsticks with my non-dominant hand, I found it difficult to hold them steady. I could hold the chopsticks, but when I tried to move them, the two chopsticks, especially the lower one, would move in the wrong direction, making it difficult to pick up food. To use chopsticks, I realized that it was a high priority for me to practice so that when I moved the tips of my chopsticks, the lower chopsticks would be stable (fixed) and the upper chopsticks would move significantly. Therefore, I decided to practice how to stabilize the lower chopsticks.
Important practice to stabilize the chopsticks with a non-dominant hand
▶︎ Fix the chopsticks at three points with your thumb and ring finger.
To stabilize the lower chopsticks, you need to fix them at three points. These three points are, (1) Between the thumb and index finger, (2) Around the first joint of the thumb, and (3) The tip of the ring finger. If you place your thumb in the middle of (1) (between your thumb and index finger) and (2) (at the tip of your ring finger), you can firmly fix the chopsticks at three points.
Once you can hold the lower chopsticks in place with your thumb and ring finger, make sure that the lower chopsticks do not wobble when you bend and stretch your index and middle fingers (this is important!). I recommend practicing until you can do it!
It’s done! (This is important! I recommend practicing until you can do it!) Even if you think you can do it, the first joint of your thumb may be bent, so check it again (see the figure below).
Why I point out that you should keep the first joint of your thumb extend? Because when you hold the chopsticks, they are not bent. If the first joint of the thumb is deeply bent, it will be difficult to move the upper chopsticks (see the figure below).
▶︎ Hold the pen in the same way and try to draw a line.
Once they could hold the lower chopsticks stably with three fixed points, they switched the chopsticks to a pen and wrote horizontal lines, vertical lines, and curves as they wished. I think it is important to do this from various directions, not only from right to left, left to right, up to down, down to up, etc. The reason for this is that chopsticks are used not only in one direction, but also by applying force to them from various directions, so if the bottom chopsticks are misaligned no matter which direction your hand is facing, it will affect the way you use them.
If you can hold the lower chopsticks stably, you can hold the upper chopsticks with the tips of your index and middle fingers, and then hold the tips of the chopsticks together.
